Well, we were offered 33 calls today, 25 of which I was able to get to before the users bailed. Of course, I was a bit late… oh well… Of the 33 calls, we had an inordinate number of lockouts for our student administration system…

Yes…
No posts for forever, then three in one day… at least thus far.
So here I am sitting in my office for the aforementioned person who is taking a study group today, rather than working. Well, I step out to go to lunch for 10 minutes - over to the student union - next door.
Well, there's a small problem.
It seems that at this commuter school of about 37k students, the union's restaurants are ALL closed on Sunday. But the building is open. Okay… the edifice itself is open - and there are employees present. But there are no restaurants, or other services, operating.
While I'd be willing to bet the argument would be that “tax dollars are not at work here, it's just fees collected from students”, I'm also willing to bet that that's a load of crap.
The library is open for studying… and there are students there… but not enough to cause the union to want to open up their restaurants or cafeteria.
Okay… my rant is over.
PapaJohn's here I come!
Yes, I'm still annoyed, as it's only minutes after my last post - but I have to write about The Pan.
I bought this pan about a month ago - it's a cast iron skillet from a company called Lodge Manufacturing. It's a nice, grey, metallic 10 3/4″ wide 8 pound behemoth. Well, we bought it unseasoned, and have been trying to use it to get it properly seasoned so that the surface inside is nice and smooth.
This thing is the absolute best pan I have used in forever… It is not non-stick in the conventional sense of the word, but nothing sticks to the bottom of the pan… bacon, eggs, hamburgers… the all slide right out with some prodding.
What is amazing about this thing is, duh, the heat retention and ability of the pan to spread the heat evenly. All areas on the surface of the pan basically are the same temp, so there are no hotspots. If you heat it right, to a nice moderate heat, the thing cooks eggs like you wouldn't believe.
At $8.00 (there was shipping, but I found out after I ordered I could have picked it up at WalMart for $8), it is probably the best deal in pans that I have found in a long time.
So, here I sit… whilst my friends and family are out and about, I’m stuck in the orifice today handling calls in the call center that I manage. It seems that I have a student who is an engineering major who had a “study group” Friday, yesterday, and today… suffice it to say I’m dubious about whether or not this was indeed a study group, or a weekend vacation. While I’m not distrusting of the individual, let’s just say that I’ve not heard of many whole-weekend study groups… but that’s not what’s annoying me.
What is annoying me is that the other group that falls under my boss, the User Accounts Management group, in combination with the Systems group, has arbitrarily decided to start using another ID other than SSN to determine what a user’s e-mail address will be. This wouldn’t be so bad, if it had been communicated to us beforehand, and if the group would have changed the tools available to our customers to look up their OWN e-mail addresses - but NOOOOOooooooooooooooooo… that’s not how it happens.
This is the way it happens:
The decision is made in a vacuum, which is typical for such a fine state institution as this, and then we at the help desk are left to deal with the repercussions. Today it’s not that bad, but I can see this ballooning into something major by, oh, the middle of the week.
Yes, I’m on edge… oh well. I guess I just need to deal with it.
That and write an e-mail to the head of UAM and my boss (who is also her boss) asking them to fix the problem.
