Okay, Hurricane Jeanne missed us here in Miami. We DID get some bad weather - winds, rain, etc., but nothing like our friends (and my parents and sister) to the north.
On the news this morning, we heard them discussing the fact that on the barrier islands (islands that dot the Florida coast, north to south, on the Atlantic side of the state), several people chose to not heed the evacuation warnings, because “Frances wasn't that bad.” The difference, of course, being that Frances was a medium category 2, while Jeanne was a strong category 3, with 30-50 mph difference in the sustained wind. I've a feeling that there are going to be a lot more casualties from this one than from Frances. Luckily my folks and sister did decide to heed the warnings, and got out of the way.
It's been an interesting hurricane season, to say the least. What's funny is that I've had friends go from asking: “So, do you go to the beach all the time, or Disney World?” to asking: “How can you stand it down there, the heat, humidity, and hurricanes!?” And it would seem, from information gathered from the Hurricane Center, that this is a more typical season than the tranquil ones that we've had for my entire life, save Andrew and a few other storms in recent years. In fact, the last major storm, before Andrew, that I remember getting ready for was Hurricane David in the 1979 season. I think it was '79 - my folks were in the process of building a pool in our home in Homestead, I was in summer school because I chose that as my summer activity, and that was 3rd grade. In THAT storm, we had to carry about 500-700 red bricks in to our house, as they were stacked up behind the house to build the pool. The storm, thankfully, never hit.
And now, since I couldn't get in touch with my co-workers, I sit in my office at work taking non-existent support calls. Luckily they'll be here shortly.
