Fun fun fun…

Okay, Hurricane Jeanne missed us here in Miami.  We DID get some bad weather - winds, rain, etc., but nothing like our friends (and my parents and sister) to the north.

On the news this morning, we heard them discussing the fact that on the barrier islands (islands that dot the Florida coast, north to south, on the Atlantic side of the state), several people chose to not heed the evacuation warnings, because “Frances wasn't that bad.”  The difference, of course, being that Frances was a medium category 2, while Jeanne was a strong category 3, with 30-50 mph difference in the sustained wind.  I've a feeling that there are going to be a lot more casualties from this one than from Frances.  Luckily my folks and sister did decide to heed the warnings, and got out of the way.

It's been an interesting hurricane season, to say the least.  What's funny is that I've had friends go from asking: “So, do you go to the beach all the time, or Disney World?” to asking: “How can you stand it down there, the heat, humidity, and hurricanes!?”  And it would seem, from information gathered from the Hurricane Center, that this is a more typical season than the tranquil ones that we've had for my entire life, save Andrew and a few other storms in recent years.  In fact, the last major storm, before Andrew, that I remember getting ready for was Hurricane David in the 1979 season.  I think it was '79 - my folks were in the process of building a pool in our home in Homestead, I was in summer school because I chose that as my summer activity, and that was 3rd grade.  In THAT storm, we had to carry about 500-700 red bricks in to our house, as they were stacked up behind the house to build the pool.  The storm, thankfully, never hit.

And now, since I couldn't get in touch with my co-workers, I sit in my office at work taking non-existent support calls.  Luckily they'll be here shortly.

Well… In't that Spaycial…

So this week, I went to see His Holiness, Tenzin Gyatso, the XIVth Dalai Lama of Tibet.  He gave a lecture at my place of employment, about compassion being the source of hapiness.  The lecture was at 11:00 yesterday morning.  I'm still thinking about it today.  My original thought was that it was not an earth-shaking lecture - he talked to an audience of 10,000 as though he were talking to us one-on-one.  Understated, but quite effective.

I had my first exam in Statistics I today.  I think I did well, which probably means I flunked the hell out of the test.

We'll see what tomorrow holds… if it's the weekend, there must be a hurricane coming for us from somewhere.

Ivan Update

Sorry I haven't been keeping this place as up-to-date as I would have liked… Looks like for South Florida, it's going to be a near miss, but for the west coast, hurricane force winds will likely be felt up the entire west coast of Florida until the storm puts in near Appalachicola…. and it looks like the WHOLE peninsular portion of the state will feel TS Force Winds. I got this map from the US Naval Research Laboratory.

Hurricane Ivan

This one is a Category 5 of 5.  Top winds presently 160MPH, but if it reaches us here in South Florida the winds should only be 120-130MPH or so.

Day One… I made it…

Well, left for her grandmother's funeral last night around 9:45… first stop was for her to spend the night with her parents, as they were leaving at four this morning.  About 11:00 last night, I realized that I didn't have keys for her parents' place, which is bad, because I'm supposed to be feeding her mother's cats.  So I sent her a text message to her phone, and tried to call her.  She didn't answer.

But she sure woke the hell out of me at 3:45 this morning, when she showed up with the keys…

Thankfully, the boys didn't wake up until 8:30.  That was a good thing, because I didn't get much sleep without Tracy here.  So I got to sleep in.  Opened up the call center at 8 from here at home, and posted an appropriate message.  Had breakfast.  What's a group of guys “batching” it supposed to eat for breakfast?  Yup… you guessed it - Cold pizza.

Played with the boys in between having to answer requests by IM from my coworkers.  Gotta remember to write procedures for EVERYTHING for when I'm not available…  In the lead-up to lunch, the boys had naps.  I considered going in for one, but talked myself out of it.  Then we had lunch…  leftover polski kielbasa, broccoli, and potatoes.

After lunch, which was around 3, put on a movie for the boys… Donovan (AngelBaby from inariargenteus' postings) asked for “James Bond” so that's what I put on:  The man with the Golden Gun.

Went to feed the cats, and the instructions were not written for the food.  They were written for the medicines.  Which was fine, except I gave the cats six cans of food when I should have given them one.  Turned around halfway home and went back and corrected my mistake.

Went to the grocery store, and picked up some stuff.  Publix was still cleaned out of canned goods from the storm prep that happened last week in the run-up to Frances.  Now we have Ivan breathing down our necks… and no canned goods to be found.

Came home and had ravioli and garlic bread.  Both boys ate some, which was surprising.  Then we had cookies for dessert.

All in all, it was a great day.  Hopefully tomorrow I get to spend more time with the boys!

We made it through Frances

And now I'm headed in to work to get the University back up and running.  Then I'll be home!

Da Boyz…

One thing that Hurricane Frances has given me that is a good thing is time to sit and play with my boys, Donovan and Logan.  They're both growing up so fast, and are starting to play more and more independently, but there's still plenty to do with them.  For example, today I helped Logan pick up the toys in the living room.  Yes, this counts as playtime.  Why?  Because when logan plays, he cleans.  When donovan plays, he dumps everything everywhere.  So now all we have to do it get them in sync.  :-D
Also, due to the death of ' grandmother this past week, I'll be able to build an even better relationship with my boys, as I will be taking off work to watch them while Tracy goes up to Pensacola for the funeral.  It's a bittersweet thing for me, because no one likes to go to funerals, regardless of the reason, but it's forcing me to do something I should probably do more often: spend time with the boys, in a more primary capacity than I normally would.

This week, a special treat.

Writing about me relaxing with my sons.

So… What has Hurricane Frances meant to me?

Thus far, Frances has meant to me that I am getting some time off from work to spend with my family.

We halted hurricane preparations last night, due to the fact that NHC seemed to think the storm would go further up the coast than here.  Don't worry… we are keeping a close eye on the projected path and also satellite imagery, and if it looks like it may be making a turn to the left (west), we'll make our move as well, buttoning up the place and going further inland.

We JUST NOW got our first band from the storm, and it looks like there's a constant 20MPH or so wind, with gusts up near 30.  Blustery, but nothing we can't handle.

Test

I am testing the post functionality from my cell phone.

Musings and Happenings…

Well, it now looks like we're going to take more of a direct hit from Frances than previously thought…  the 5AM advisory puts this storm clearly within reach of where we live and work, and it has us all a bit more than a little bit on pins and needles.  Work has decided to close to students today, but staff must be here until 1:00 p.m., which is a damn sight better than the 5:00 p.m. closing time we were hearing about up until 2:00 this morning.
