I have held off on writing about the Terri Schiavo case, because it seems that this case is receiving enough ranting to fill a few (thousand) pages…
While I applaud the husband for trying to carry out what are, supposedly, her wishes, I can't fault the parents for wanting to keep their baby alive. I think I would probably be doing the same thing in their case - we're not meant to see our children die. So, I understand both sides of the case. However, in this case, I lean ever so slightly in the direction of Michael Schiavo. Why?
He's the guardian. He's the one who is looking out for his wife's best interests. He's helping her out of this world as she suggested she wanted, should she need to be kept alive artificially. This is a courageous act, and I would hope that my wife would do the same for me, were it would be true that I would not be able to live but for machines breathing or eating for me. (No, I do not have advanced directives in place; however, I need to get that done.)
The parents have tried to drag this through the courts, repeatedly. I'd hate to see their legal bills; however, someone is probably doing this work pro bono. I can understand once, twice, three-times-a-maybe… but 25 times now? And it's probably too late to save her, regardless what the District Court of Appeals for the Southeastern United States rules. It's a sad situation all around…
While I side with Mr. Schiavo in this case, I must say that starving and keeping water from Terri is a dastardly way of dealing with the situation. There are other, more appropriate, more humane ways of providing her an exit from this world. Just ask Dr. Kevorkian. While he is the butt of many jokes, I do admire his work in trying to provide those who wish to die a humane method of doing so.
Let her die in peace… then try to think back fifteen years, and remember what your daughter used to be like…
That's my advice, and I'm sticking to it.
