If you live in the United States, and are a registered voter, Tuesday, November 7, is an important date that you should mark on your calendar. It is, of course, Election Day.
Since the law of the land has changed, and we are now required to show photo ID when we go vote, please remember to take your valid photo identification to the polling place. This is not a time to make a political statement by “forgetting” your picture ID. Do that AFTER the election by contacting your senator or representative in Congress, and making it known to them that you don't feel it necessary to provide this type of identification to cast your ballot.
Speaking of ballots, down here in Miami-Dade, we aren't provided a paper trail for our touch-screen iVotronic machines. Since these companies are not required to divulge how their “black-boxes” work, I'm considering not trusting this technology in this all-important election, and am considering voting absentee, since this is the only paper-based balloting that will be occuring in my county. If anyone else here happens to live in this county, and wants to vote absentee, you can get information on this by clicking this link: Miami-Dade Elections, Absentee Voting.
Also, while she's not in this area, please check out Toledo Lefty's blog. She has some incisive opinions on what's happening in our world, in my not so humble opinion.
Today I got to go to the Emergency Room to have the staples removed from the back of my son's head. 10 days ago he slipped and fell backwards, hitting his head on a terazzo step in our house. The cut itself was ugly, but no permanent damage was done to the step. I'm sure my son's head will bear the scar, under his hair, for life. Getting the staples in and out was a pretty cool experience for him - he is now not afraid of doctors and hospitals, this is a good thing.
One of my classes is going good - so far. While I'm happy with my Geographical Information Systems course, I'm a tad disappointed with my graduate seminar in Dynamics of Contemporary International Relations. It seems the professor is hell-bent on making the class productive toward each of our research interests; however, the point of the class is primarily to give us a history of diplomacy in the western world, from pre World War I (1914) to the present. The course content has plenty to do with my research, in terms of economic development and intergovernmental negotiation; however, the prof has gone so far as to assign us work in the class that has nothing to do with the course material. She's relatively new, so I give her the benefit of the doubt that she hasn't gained her “sea legs” in how to work this particular course. Maybe she can learn from us. Hey, there's a positive spin on anything.
Congratulations to for gaining her permanent residency in Canada. Now maybe she'll be able to find meaningful work in the Great White North.
is working on an Interior Design degree from The Academy of Art University. So far, she's doing really well in her classes, and I'm trying to help out with everything that I can as far as this is concerned. Maybe I should nudge her. Yeah, I think I will.
