What's new?

Not much, really. Here's a shout out to all you lurkers out there who read this.

I found out this weekend that I have a bit of an audience… okay, one person, really… who looks at this. He's a great guy. In fact, he's the father of my wife, the lovely . It's kind of embarrassing when you realize that someone is looking at your LJ who you didn't expect to have looking at it. But then that's why we put stuff out here, isn't it… so others can read it.

I think I'm starting to get out of my funk. For those who don't know, I've been in a funk… I've been taking a lot of “in-office sabbaticals” lately, where I've pretty much disengaged from my staff. Now I find that I'm re-engaging with my staff in a big, big way. To the point where they're starting to engage with me, too. This is A Very Good Thing. Now I just need to put it to good use: in my family life, in my studies, and in my work.

It's now less than two weeks until our Disney trip. We're going for another five-night, four-day extravaganza. This should be extremely fun, since it won't be summer.

Speaking of theme parks, we went, this past weekend, to a local one: The Miami Seaquarium. Liam, a friend of ours, gave our family annual passes to go to the Seaquarium. We had a lot of fun; but it was sad to see that they haven't really done anything with the park since the last time I went: 1985. I know that the park doesn't have the number of tourists that go to Disney; I don't even know if they have the number that go to Parrot Jungle Island, about 5 miles due north of this location. What I do know is that it is expensive to maintain a park of this nature, and that they do charge a lot for people to get in. I think that the owners would be well served to improve the facility. Yes, it's only 35, 38 acres; but you know what? It CAN be made a lot nicer with some landscaping - there is hardly ANY shade there.

Anyhow, that's all for now.

Ciao!

Happy New Year, Part Deux…

Today, the 8th, is when classes start here at lovely Florida International University. My classes, all two of them, are on Tuesdays, so I don't go to class until tomorrow at 2:00p.m.

I ended up dropping my GIS class, because I didn't feel like killing myself this semester; choosing, instead, to invest more time with my family than with my professors. So, I'll be taking a class in Comparative Area Studies and one on Labor and Economic Development. One is required (area studies), but it seems that it will go a long way toward explaining why some things that I will be studying happen.

On the home-front, was able to go out on Saturday and be an adult at a party celebrating the 30th birthday of one of her friends, Kristin. If Kristin was on here, I'd shout out to her, but she's not, so I won't. I'll let fill in the details of the party, if she chooses to.

Got to work early today, after slacking for three to four weeks… 7:45 a.m. was when I walked in. I think I'll be getting up early from now on.

Also, I'm going to be becoming more professional in my wardrobe. It's time to start dressing up, so that I can begin to move up the chain in the way that I really want to. Suits will be what I'll be wearing.

Anyhow, time for me to get back to work.

Happy New Year!

Yes, I'm quite well aware that I'm more than a tad late, thank you very much.

and I went through our planners last night (what else is there to do at 10:30 p.m. on January 1), and came up with a plan to better share the housework, and make our home a much more livable space.  We should have done this prior to her starting classes last August, but there's no better time than the present.  After almost 13 years of marriage, you would think we would know what we need to do to keep a clean house, but we really hadn't worked out that part of our lives.  I'm thankful that we finally did.

The holidays are almost over (we celebrate the entire season in some way, shape, or form, all the way to 6 January), and I couldn't be more thankful.  Of the holiday season, Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, followed by New Year's Day as a close second.  Christmas, with all its commercialism that is inherent to today, can take a flying leap.  I hate it.  Don't get me wrong - I love playing Santa (literally and figuratively).  I love watching my kids open their gifts.  I love welcoming the sun back, as the days steadily grow longer.  But I really don't like buying, nor do I particularly like receiving, all the stuff that comes with the holiday.  I love most of the gifts we get; but I'd love it if we didn't get them either.  I love to give gifts, too.  My favorite gift to give, (and to receive), is time with family, followed by gifts of charity, if we know what people like to support (we give gifts to places like Heifer or Toys for Tots, in the names of others).  Time with family and friends is easy to give: gift certificates to restaurants, food, etc.  A consumerist I am not.

Anyhow… enough on that rant.

The coming of the new year gives me pause to evaluate where I'm going… to figure out that which is important to me.  To that end, I resolve the following:

  1. To become a better student through improving my study habits and relationships with all who play a part in my education (that includes you, my friends).
  2. To grow closer to my lovely wife, , in order to better strengthen my relationship with her.
  3. To share, daily, with my children how important they are to me, and to show them the right way to live.
  4. To be close, through more posts, with you, my friends.
