Double Monday… Double Plus Ungood…

This is my second Monday this week. I don't like them to begin with.

Got to take some much-needed time off the past couple of days. It was great, spending time with my boys, and .

I got to see some of the winters that deals with, on a show on the History Channel, of all places. The show, Ice Road Truckers, is basically about which trucker for the company earns the most cash. It's a race, in a place where races can mean death by men who drive 40 hours with what… two hours of sleep, because they jerk the wheel after nodding off, and flip their load onto the ice on which they drive.

I'm sure I'm exaggerating, but probably not by much.

Kiyo… I talked to Inariargenteus about coming up and driving for BHP, but Tracy won't have it. As for your winters, I still want to come up there to feel what it's like.

So what's new?

Not much new is going on in my neck of the woods.

I am pushing myself to stay interested in my job at FIU. I guess we all fall into a career slump every now and then, but it's hard when you're a manager, to stay motivated when there's no push coming from above to produce the highest quality work possible. In that regard, I guess it's a double-edged sword that I am a manager.

As an entrepreneur, I have to push myself to produce the best possible product that I can; but as a manager I can sit back and be a slacker. Right? No… not quite. Because if I become a slacker, many of the people who report to me might also become slackers. This is not cool, because if that happens, than we start to have customer service problems, and that's not good, because as an institution of higher learning, we need to provide the best possible service to our customers: the students, faculty, and staff.

So, I'm working on some stuff at work to try to ensure that there is more than just me in place, as a go-to person, because I have way too many direct reports (19 at last count), and not enough of a business strategy to deal with all of the people who report to me (some of whom read this from time to time).

In my personal life, I've made some changes that have made life with better. I've tried to help out more around the house. I've taken on the dishes as my own to do (we don't have a dishwasher), and that appears to have made things better for us.

I've slacked off on the bathroom duty, which is also mine to do. I should be back on task with that by the end of the week this week. We'll see what happens.

I am taking a small vacation this week, like many other Americans. I promised myself I would take off, if I could, Monday and Tuesday of this week, which happen to be the two days before July 4. We already get July 4 as a holiday, so it'll be nice to have off and be with the family.

What's new with all two of you who read this?

A brief movie review…

It's not very often that I get to watch adult-oriented movies with my honey, , but we did, last night, watch Fight Club. Talk about messed up. But it was a very entertaining movie. She picked it, not me. It was a choice between Fight Club and Atanarjuat, otherwise known as “The Fast Runner,” an Inuit film based on survival in the northernmost parts of the Great White North.

Fight Club's action can be gory at times, and it's tagline message “How much can you know about yourself if you've never been in a fight?” is a tad ludicrous if taken literally, but it is an eye opener about what we can accomplish if we put our minds to it. Of course, Tyler Durden ultimately used his power over people in a sinister way, but to realize that we do ultimately have power over our destiny is the message this film delivers.
