OK, so I’m out of work today because I’m sick, and I’m going through my Spam mail, and find a little ditty from Classmates.com:
From: ClassmatesEmail@classmates.com
Subject: Carmen Gonzalez just joined South Dade High School, Sean
Date: January 28, 2009 2:58:20 PM EST
And I keep looking at it and looking at it and looking at it and wondering… “Why does this f-ing thing look so weird to me?” Then it hits me. First it hits me who Carmen Gonalez is – we knew her as “Toy” in high school, then it hits me how distasteful this advertisement would come across to anyone who knows her.
Carmen “Toy” Gonzalez died some time ago. I, unfortunately, don’t know when – I didn’t keep in touch with her. But I do know that she is no longer with us.
Now – knowing how technology works, I’m certain that someone went on to Classmates as her to set up a site to memorialize her. This is great – but the advertisement sent out as Spam, in her name, is utterly distasteful.
If you’re interested in keeping in touch with your former classmates, do it through a free service such as Facebook. Don’t waste your money on Classmates. They’ll just use your name, probably without your permission, to try to get others to pony up their fees just to keep their Ponzi scheme going.
We had a great time last evening at Kristin Jayd’s birthday party (she’s 29 again, I think…). There was music, karaoke, discussion of atomic betty pastel and macramé, lots of families with kids running all about, and tons of DELICIOUS FOOD!
I mention this because Kristin is one of what I call a group of “powerful wise women” that seem to have taken center stage in my life. And she seems to surround herself with many of the same. I call them powerful, because they each, in their own right, effect the environments around them by evoking a nurturing aura that is calming, welcoming, and, above all, protecting.
I’m glad that I’m married to one, too, because one doesn’t want to find themselves working against this group. It would be a battle that would make Sysiphus look like a total victor in his climb up that hill with his rock.
Happy birthday, Kristin. May you have many more.

If you were one of those who “didn’t make the cut” in the culling of my Facebook friends list, do not be offended. Those who remain are lucky, themselves, to be there, for it was a last minute thought about how I will keep in touch with my family and friends that kept my account active. Once I figure that out, it’s quite likely that I will be deleting my Facebook account altogether.
“But Sean, why,” you ask?
Well, my answer is simple. I read an article yesterday on a person who got rid of her Facebook account because she was basically tired of the popularity contest that Facebook foists on its customers. Yes… indeed… my friends. It is a veritable high school-ish popularity contest.
One I have no intention of reliving.
